Forgot to Send a Birthday Card? Phone It In

SHORT video messages or greetings for phones could soon be as ubiquitous as texting, or at least that’s what greeting card companies and other firms are hoping as they try out a new mobile service that delivers a brief video, with sound and music, as quickly, easily and often as cheaply as sending a text.

American Greetings has a new service that transmits a video card chosen from its Web site directly to handsets of nearly all major mobile carriers. It has used a partnership with Mogreet Inc., provider of a multimedia messaging platform, to deliver the full-motion video greeting. Mogreet, based in Venice, Calif., is also working with the National Football League Players Association and other organizations to deliver campaigns directly to cellphones.

Coke`s Innovative Olympic Mobile Campaign

In conjunction with NBC, Coca-Cola has developed a brand new Olympic campaign set to launch for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The partnership between the US broadcasting giant and non-alcoholic beverage king will allow people from all over the US to follow US athletes during their foray into Vancouver over the next couple of weeks. The campaign focuses on US athletes expected to medal or at the very least do well enough to deserve a certain amount of press.

Known as the Coca-Cola Six-Pack, the mobile campaign in conjunction with the Open The Games, Open Happiness campaign, ties together print media, television coverage and web updates all in the palm of hands. The hope is to gather a lot of national support for Olympic athletes, but at the same time show how companies like Coke and NBC are backing the games. Together with hand held updates, images, statistics and a custom built Coke WAP interface, the Six-Pack will also provide custom ring tones and phone sounds based on the games.

FarmVille Wins Social Networking Game of the Year Award

The 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony was held last night as part of the video game industry’s Dice Summit conference in Las Vegas, NV. Games.com reports that the top honor in the “Social Networking Game of the Year” category went to Zynga’s massively popular Facebook game FarmVille.

It was up against PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz, EA/Playfish’s Restaurant City and Codebell’s Farm Town. With nearly 81 million monthly active players (which Zynga is quick to note has already made it bigger than Twitter), FarmVille is far and away the largest of the bunch and in some ways a shoo-in for the award. Just Activate! going strong at Unilever Head Office

As reported earlier, the Activation Expo being held at the Unilever Head Office is doing extremely well. Converge Technologies has offered five innovative ideas to interact with the target market, out of which one was time-based SMS alerts while the rest four were physical Activations placed in the first and second floor of Unilever head office.

Out of the displayed activities, two are getting the highest foot traffic in the Just Activate Expo: Flora’s Wii Heart Love, featuring Nintendo Wii platform and pre-selected games for enhancing physical activity and entertainment, and Sunsilk’s Metamorphosis, that let’s the user try out different hairstyles by uploading their own live picture. Recap of the activities is given below:

Google Launches Powerful Mobile Shopping App for Android

Google has just rolled out “Google Shopper,” a new mobile application for Android devices that offers a variety of different ways to search for products.

In addition to basic search functionality, users can search by voice, take a picture of cover art, or scan a bar code to get detailed product information and price comparison. Google introduces the application on its website and in the video below.

As AndroidAndMe notes, the app clearly competes with the likes of ShopSavvy, who tells the publication that Google [and Amazon] “are and always have been our biggest competitors.”

Google could deal a much stronger blow to the upstart by including Shopper – currently a Labs product – with new Android handsets. We also don’t see why Google wouldn’t extend the app to other mobile platforms as well. Continue reading ‘Google Launches Powerful Mobile Shopping App for Android’

Cadbury’s Creme Egg gets “eggmented reality”

The chocolate chickens that lay its Creme Eggs (above, via Blisstree, the nicest pic we could find) have spent their time off mucking around with augmented reality.

From today, anyone who points their browser at www.cremeegg.com will have the option of downloading and printing out this PDF file which, when held in front of a webcam, will project a virtual card on to your computer screen.

I don’t want to spoilt the surprise too much, but the virtual card consists of a Creme Egg and Newton’s Cradle. Users can then watch as the Creme Egg rolls around the card – whilst interactively altering the angle of view and moving the image closer and further away – before the Creme Egg launches itself into the Newton’s Cradle to meet its gooey end.

The 10 best museum websites

Museums are rarely able to exhibit more than a fraction of the material they own, and even then the best stuff is too often sealed off behind glass or mobbed by school parties. There are no such problems on museum websites, where space is unlimited and objects, scanned in high definition, can be browsed in close-up. Here is the pick of the world’s collections.

louvre.fr

Frequently named the greatest museum in the world, this cornerstone of French culture has a website to match. Its size is staggering, but it is straightforward to navigate and its “virtual visit”, in which you click your way though the museum’s exquisitely adorned corridors, is not to be missed. Can HBO Succeed in Online Video?

HBO — best known for its paid movie channels and original shows such as Entourage — is looking to become a kingpin in the online video world. Whether it can take on the likes of Hulu, Netflix, YouTube and Epix is another matter.

Earlier this month, Time Warner (the parent company of HBO), started discussing its plans for HBO GO, a HuluHulu-like site for accessing the channel’s movies and TV shows. There is a catch, of course: You have to be an HBO subscriber to get it. Continue reading ‘Can HBO Succeed in Online Video?’

Nokia passes key milestones as services business continues strong momentum

With a great user experience, an aggressive global rollout plan and a focus on local relevance, Nokia truly put its services on the map – and the strong momentum continues.

“Our recipe for success has some pretty simple ingredients: delighting consumers. Yes, we are in more places, serving more people, with more great content and services. True, more than a million apps are being downloaded a day from our store; Comes with Music is now available in over 25 markets; and every second of the day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, another person downloads our new Ovi Maps app. These are great achievements, but our goal is to delight hundreds of millions of consumers around the world – and we are well on our way,” says Niklas Savander, head of Nokia’s services business.
