Will too many Facebook friends be the downfall of social media?

Just as brands up their spending on social media marketing, potentially worrying news reaches the industry: consumers are trusting their friends a lot less than they used to.

An Edelman report recently found that only a quarter of those surveyed considered friends and peers to be credible sources of information. That’s down from almost half in 2008.

The findings have stirred up interest for obvious reasons, not least because the trust that consumers place in peer recommendations has been one of the primary drivers of the social web. It’s what has PR and digital agencies evangelising, and brands shifting marketing dollars online.

This precarious drop in trust is bad news. But is it surprising? Continue reading ‘Will too many Facebook friends be the downfall of social media?’

Social Media Marketing from ‘Compare the Meerkat’

One of the most interesting marketing campaigns of recent times in my opinion is Compare the Markets. The marketing guys here seem to be trying some viral marketing which is usually seen in movies. The main character is a Russian meerkat named Aleksandr Orlov, has somehow got himself in a mess with similar website CompareTheMarket.com due to his similar domain name. Worlds of Email Marketing and Twitter Collide

In another sign of how the lines between traditional digital marketing and social media are blurring, email marketer ExactTarget has acquired Twitter management tool CoTweet for an undisclosed sum. ExactTarget, based in Indianapolis, has tools that allow companies to target email marketing pitches and related “permission-based” web campaigns, and has a customer list that includes Expedia, Home Depot, Gannett Co. and Wellpoint Inc.

Although it does some text messaging as part of its marketing services, it is not known for its work with social media. The CoTweet acquisition is clearly an attempt to change that. Continue reading ‘Worlds of Email Marketing and Twitter Collide’

Google’s App Store for Business to Launch Next Week

Google is set to launch an app store for business next week, and it will be focused around creating software for Google Apps and could launch as soon as Tuesday.

Early last month, news leaked about Google working on its own app store that would give third-party apps and developers the opportunity to sell their software to customers of Google Apps. This included options for increasing security, word-processing and information porting/syncing. Continue reading ‘Google’s App Store for Business to Launch Next Week’

Social Media: The Cult of Toyota

Toyota might be telling Capitol Hill it wants to regain the public trust, but judging from Facebook, it may not have lost it.

According to Doug Frisbie, Toyota Motor Sales USA’s national social media and marketing integration manager, the automaker has actually grown its Facebook fan base more than 10% since late January, around the time of the marketer’s Jan. 21 recall announcement and its Jan. 26 stop-sale date. Remarkable Stats on the State of the Internet

Individual stats like Facebook passing the 400 million user mark, Twitter hitting 50 million tweetsper day, and YouTube viewers watching 1 billion videos per day are impressive on their own, but what if we looked at Internet-related stats collectively? Jesse Thomas did just that in his video State of the Internet.

The video — created and animated by Thomas with data from multiple sources — highlights some remarkable figures and visually depicts the Internet as we know it today. It’s a must-watch video for anyone trying to wrap their minds around just how immersed web technologies have become in our everyday lives. iTunes Breaks The 10 Billion Song Downloads Barrier

Its finally happened! Apple iTunes has broken the 10 billion song download barrier. The iTunes song download counter hit 10 billion and it was a milestone that Apple had been counting down to for the last two weeks.

Apple’s iTunes store sold its 10 billionth song on Wednesday (Feb. 24), thanks to massive sales of tracks by Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Coldplay.

Apple revealed that Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” is iTunes’ all-time most-downloaded song, with”Boom Boom Pow” coming in at No. 3. Lady Gaga is the solo artist with the most songs in the top 25, with “Poker Face” (No. 2), “Just Dance” (No. 6) and “Bad Romance” (No. 22) all making the list. Other acts with tracks in the top 10 include Jason Mraz, Coldplay, Flo Rida, Taylor Swift, Leona Lewis and Ke$ha. Continue reading ‘iTunes Breaks The 10 Billion Song Downloads Barrier’

Twitter to the fore in telling news

The idea that social media may replace traditional news sources in the age of Web 2.0 has never been more real. When software professional Kiran Jonnalagadda, trapped in the smoke-filled fifth floor of the Carlton Towers in Bangalore, wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter about his experience, he instantly became the primary source of information for many.

This included traditional news sources such as newspapers and television channels who were still on their way to the spot. Tweeple – twitter parlance for micro-bloggers – re-tweeted his messages about the fire, links to photographs that he was updating real-time using GPRS and witty appeals to friends to stop calling him in panic. Gaga, Oooh La La: Why the Lady Is the Ultimate Social Climber

As far as breakout musicians go, few artists have had quite the zero-awareness-to-ubiquity time-warp of Lady Gaga. And as far as brands go, few marketers of any kind have leveraged social media the way she has to drive sales of their core product — in her case, albums and digital singles.

Lady Gaga, with her army of nearly 2.8 million Twitter followers and more than 5.2 million Facebook fans, can move product. Since fall 2008, her digital-single sales have exceeded 20 million and her album sales hit 8 million, all at a time when no one under the age of 60 buys CDs anymore (see Susan Boyle breaking the record for highest first-week album sales last year). Now, she’s being courted by marketers to do the same for their products. Continue reading ‘Gaga, Oooh La La: Why the Lady Is the Ultimate Social Climber’
