Facebook Will Rule the Web During the Next Decade

According to Compete.com, Facebook recently became the top source of traffic to major sites such as Yahoo and MSN, surpassing Google. Hitwise said that Facebook is the fourth leading traffic driver to news sites.

Nielsen reported that in January, U.S. consumers spent a staggering seven hours a month on Facebook — more than three and a half times the time spent on Yahoo, which ranked second in attention. Continue reading ‘Facebook Will Rule the Web During the Next Decade’

Chevy Uses SXSW Confab to Kick off Social Media, Tech Push

Chevrolet’s making a big splash at South by Southwest Interactive this year, and it’s just the beginning of the automaker’s planned 30% commitment to digital this year.

“This is not a nine-day one-off,” said Christopher Barger, General Motor’s director of social media. “Everything we’re doing here needs to have applications we can build on beyond Austin.” Continue reading ‘Chevy Uses SXSW Confab to Kick off Social Media, Tech Push’

The State of the Twittersphere 2010

The state and future of Twitter is passionately debated as users and industry pundits explore whether or not the platform and the relationships that connect one another are in danger of slowing or worse, regressing.  Over the last year, Twitter experienced its most phenomenal growth to date, fueled by the adoption of the communication network by highly visible and influential personalities that attracted legions of new users to establish one-to-many and ultimately many-to-many connections. But, then the meteoric ascent practically leveled-off… Continue reading ‘The State of the Twittersphere 2010′

NASCAR drivers crash online social scene

Elliott Sadler’s newborn son wasn’t home from the hospital before Sadler, like any proud dad, was showing off photos. Thing is, Sadler also shared them with fans on Twitter.

A few hours after Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500, fans could see a picture of the trophy in his motorhome via Twitter, posted along with the message: “Oh my God! I can’t believe it. The Daytona 500. Here is a pic of the trophy in my bus.”

Kyle Busch, who as recently as last year proclaimed he wasn’t a fan of social networking, has relented, even announcing his engagement via Twitter. Continue reading ‘NASCAR drivers crash online social scene’

Direct mail loses ground to digital post-recovery

Direct marketers are beginning to see green shoots of economic recovery, but the media mix continues to shift and experts predict direct mail will never regain its dominance, reports DM News (USA).

43% of marketers expect to see profit improvements in Q1, and 51.2% said they’ll increase their total marketing spend in 2010, according to the Direct Marketing Association’s Quarterly Business Review (QBR), released earlier this month. A waterfall of Pepsi at SXSWi

It seems a little bit counterintuitive at first that one of the most prominent brands at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSWi), an annual gathering of all things digital-media, isn’t a tech company in the least: it’s PepsiCo, a food and beverage conglomerate originally founded in 1898.

The company, a top-tier sponsor of SXSWi, had set up two large-scale booths in the hallways of the Austin Convention Center, a “Podcast Playground” that hosted various events including its “Speakeasy” video blog series, and the “Refresh Cafe,” a set of chill-out couches accompanied with materials about PepsiCo’s new “Refresh” brand revamp.

“We’re across SXSW, not just SXSW Interactive,” Bonin Bough, PepsiCo’s global director of digital and social media, told CNET several days before the festival kicked off last Thursday, in reference to the music and film festivals that run alongside SXSWi. “It’s kind of like the Super Bowl of culture, it’s film, it’s 2,000 indie bands, and it’s all the technology folks all converging, and it’s a combination of industry creators in music and media, as well as attendees that are just fans.”

Palm Rolls Out Hip Ad Campaign For March Madness

Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is finally ditching their creepy ad campaign in favor of something more hip that demonstrates the capabilities of its new WebOS devices.

The new commercials, which will hopefully reinvigorate lagging sales, are set to run during March Madness later this week. The ads much more closely resemble Apple’s commercials that demonstrate how applications work on the phone, and have the tagline “Life Moves Fast. Don’t Miss a Thing.” In this ad, an actress is able to multi-task by checking email, her calendar and checking out her location on a map as she walks down the street. Music in the background is by rapper Mos Def, whose beats are in rhythm with each touch of the device.

Virgin Mobile shows off its ‘members’

Being a Virgin Mobile “member” is one big party according to its latest marketing campaign.

The creative root of the new campaign, from Juniper Park, is a series of photographs taken at a February party for Virgin subscribers–which Virgin now calls “members.”

“The campaign is inspired by the energy, lifestyle and attitude of the brand’s members,” said Christina Gliha, associate creative director at Juniper Park. “We didn’t want to stage something that was artificial. We wanted to capture real people, real members, in a real scenario.”

Mark Hunter, a party photographer who gained prominence for his photo blog TheCobraSnake.com, photographed the party for the campaign.

Those photos are now appearing on billboards and transit ads, and online at various youth-focused web properties such as MTV.ca. Radio ads are also currently in market.

“We’re trying to say to people ‘We’ve got a self-identifying group of members who’ve said they’re part of the Virgin family, and you can be part of that,’ ” said Nathan Rosenberg, chief marketing officer at Virgin.

The New Rules of Relationship Management

The essence of the new report by Altimeter’s R “Ray” Wang and Jeremiah Owyang is putting the customer first. While that seems like a simple principle, it’s easier said then done. The case the duo make is rooted of course in social media and the self-actualization of personal influence. Continue reading ‘Customers Ignite a New Era of CRM’
