Blast from the past: A million-dollar home page!

Alex Tew was a student trying to figure out how to pay his way through university. Short of money and short of socks, he scrawled“How can I become a millionaire?” on a notepad and, twenty minutes later, The Million Dollar Homepage was born.

The concept was simple – create a website and charge people a dollar-a-pixel to place an image on a grid a thousand pixels wide by a thousand high. ‘Selling’ all million pixels – if he could pull it off – would net him a cool one million dollars.

Mobile Marketing: Get Into Your Target’s Mind by Getting Into Their Back Pocket

The accessibility of smartphones, made widespread with the grueling battle between Verizon and AT&T, is at an all-time high with their increasing popularity and affordability. Along with the wireless industry’s explosive growth in 3G coverage and technology comes the necessity for marketers to get involved in a big way. A recent 2009 Retail Holiday Season Shopper Study, conducted by Motorola, confirmed this by stating, “More than half of consumers utilized mobile phones for in-store holiday shopping activities,” including “multi-channel comparison shopping, peer feedback, product info and couponing.” That means marketers who used mobile marketing as an additional brand touch point this past holiday season were more successful in reaching over half of all holiday shoppers than those that didn’t. In this economy, can you afford not to reach for that piece of the pie?

True, more than a million apps are being downloaded a day from our store; Comes with Music is now available in over 25 markets; and every second of the day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, another person downloads our new Ovi Maps app. These are great achievements, but our goal is to delight hundreds of millions of consumers around the world – and we are well on our way,” says Niklas Savander, head of Nokia’s services business.

How Google Went Into “Code Red” And Saved Google Buzz

Here’s the story of how panicking just enough may have saved Google’s answer to Facebook and Twitter.

A week ago, Google launched an add-on to Gmail called Google Buzz. Almost immediately, the world howled with complaints that the product exposed users’ privacy by publishing lists of followers made up of the people a user emailed and chatted with most.

This made Google Buzz a danger zone for reporters, mental health professionals, cheating spouses and anyone else who didn’t want to tell the world who they emailed or chatted with most.

But since this early failing, Google employees — specifically VP of product Bradley Horowitz and Buzz product manager Todd Jackson — have done a rousing job answering criticism from users and media with rapid-fire updates to the product.
