Will Consumer Products Brands Go Ga-Ga for Video?

More consumer packaged goods brands are getting into the online video content game. Take the case of consumer products giant Clorox–its Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing brand has produced “Garden Party”, a series of original Webisodes extolling the virtues of fresh, seasonal veggies. The series of Web shorts star actress Jennie Garth of “90210″ fame, a mom of three and an advocate of healthy eating. The Webisodes are being distributed via iVillage.

In catering to lowest common mobile denominator, SMS wins

The Mobile Data Association has found that Britain’s 2009 text message total was 96.8 billion, evidence of consumers’ ever growing appetite for mobile messaging.

The continued growth of messaging is highlighted by a 2009 daily average of 265 million text messages and 1.6 million picture messages. Last year’s text message total was 96.8 billion, while more 600 million picture messages were sent across the whole year.

“Messaging remains a highly legitimate medium to communicate with a mass audience,” said Steve Reynolds, chairman of the MDA, Britain. “Other forms certainly have their place, but in catering to the lowest common mobile denominator, messaging is the way to go.

“Along with voice, it’s what users know and use on a daily basis,” he said.

According to the MDA, seasonal drivers still appear to propel the use of MMS, with 4.5 million picture messages being sent on Christmas Day. Continue reading ‘In catering to lowest common mobile denominator, SMS wins’

World’s Fastest Internet: Korea, Japan and Hong Kong

Asia’s Internet speed is not surprising news, but the details of this recent report on the Internet by Akamai show how much Asia and South Korea dominate the world of high speed Internet. Korea is also increasing the average national Internet speed at the fastest pace of any country in the world.

Although South Korea continued to hold the top spot  as the country with the highest average measured connection speed at 14.6 Mbps, its fastest city (Masan) was ranked fifth among Asian cities, at approximately 1.2x the country average. South Korea, unsurprisingly, has six of the top 10 fastest cities in Asia, all with average speeds above 15 Mbps.

More Shopping and Sharing news from Estonia

One of our spotters alerted us to yet another social shopping venture, this time out of Estonia. Much like Blippy, WhosRich.me gives consumers a way to share their latest purchases and comment on those of their friends.

Now in beta, WhosRich.me is a social utility that aims to make it easy for people to track their friends’ shopping habits. Users enter their purchases via a simple interface, including a photo along with the date, time and price; for updates on the go, a mobile iPhone app is also available. From there, other members can view and comment on each other’s purchases. The site’s search tool also lets consumers sort results by country or keyword for a look at trends of interest to them. 20+ mind-blowing social media statistics revisited

If six months ago, it wasn’t a compelling case to consider social media in the marketing mix, then this hopefully might change your mind…

  • Facebook claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day. This would mean at least 175m users every 24 hours… A considerable increase from the previous 120m.
  • Twitter now has 75m user accounts, but only around 15m are active users on a regular basis. It’s still a fair increase from the estimated 6-10m global users from a few months ago.
  • LinkedIn has over 50m members worldwide. This means an increase of around 1m members month-on-month since July/August last year.

NFL Players to run mobile video campaign during Super Bowl

During Super Bowl XLIV, NFL Players will run a multichannel marketing campaign featuring mobile video to create awareness and interest in the National Football League Players Association and its players out of uniform.

The NFLPA tapped mobile video marketing company Mogreet Inc. for the campaign, which centers on delivering a variety of videos to fans’ mobile phones, showcasing NFL athletes as “normal guys with a great job.” The campaign will be cross-promoted via out-of-home posters, online banners and mobile advertising, all driving participation in a text-to-win campaign.

“The collaboration with NFL Players and Mogreet is designed to create awareness and showcase the real side of NFL players out of uniform,” said James Citron, CEO of Mogreet, Los Angeles.

Pepsi Invites the Public to Do Good

DECADES ago, consumers were invited to “be sociable, have a Pepsi.” Now the brand wants to invite consumers to help Pepsi support social causes — and will use social media like Facebook and Twitter to help spread a message.

Pepsi-Cola is formally introducing on Monday an ambitious campaign named the Pepsi Refresh Project, aimed at doing well by doing good. The brand is dedicating at least $20 million through the end of the year for donations to local organizations and causes proposed by the public in realms like health, arts and culture, the environment and education.

Ideas for Pepsi Refresh grants can be submitted each month to a Web site (refresheverything.com), where computer users can subsequently vote on the ideas suggested during the previous month. More details are to be disclosed on Monday as a media blitz begins with an appearance by Kevin Bacon and Demi Moore on the “Today” show on NBC, where they will seek votes for their pet causes. Mr. Bacon will promote SixDegrees.org, and Ms. Moore Girls Educational & Mentoring Services.
