10 Ways Social Media Will Change In 2010

Today, it is impossible to separate social media from the online world. Facebook reached 350 million users last month — 70% of whom are outside the US — and it accounts for 25% of the Web’s traffic, according to Pew nearly one in five people on the web use Twitter or some other service to check status messages, and 94% of enterprisesplan to maintain or increase their investment in enterprise social media tools.

The social media conversation is no longer considered a Web 2.0 fad — it is taking place in homes, small businesses and corporate boardrooms, and extending its reach into the nonprofit, education and health sectors. IPhone mobile Web share decreases since Droid launch

The Droid by Motorola

Quantcast predicts that mobile Web consumption – which increased 148 percent globally in 2009 – will reach new heights in 2010.

The research firm also found that mobile Web consumption in 2009 was up 110 percent in North America. North American page views made up 1.3 percent of the global Web consumption.

“Mobile Web usage is growing exponentially and the market is at an inflection point with the increasing availability of powerful mobile devices, high bandwidth wireless connections and an increasing number of developers producing content geared for users on the go,” said Konrad Feldman, CEO of Quantcast, San Francisco.

“The data clearly shows the demand for these devices,” he said. “The launch of Motorola’s Droid on Verizon has been a huge hit, the best launch for the mobile Web since the iPhone, and it’s plain to see that consumers want and expect more from their vendors. MOST people think of the grand challenges in computing as big science projects, like simulating nuclear explosions or protein folding. But with the holiday shopping season just ended, consider another: retail marketing.

Retailing is emerging as a real-world incubator for testing how computer firepower and smart software can be applied to social science — in this case, how variables like household economics and human behavior affect shopping.

To be sure, major retailers like Wal-Mart Stores have long been sifting through in-store sales and demographic information to aim goods at different stores and to tightly manage supplies.

Google Adds “Near Me Now” to its Mobile Homepage

Google has just added a useful button to its  mobile homepage – tagged “near me now”, this feature lets you search by using your location as the query.  Currently available for iPhone and Android phone users in the U.S., “Near me now” utilizes GPS for determining your whereabouts and then searches for results near your location.

The new Google mobile homepage feature lets you easily search for popular categories of nearby places. Just by clicking or tapping on the “Near me now” link right on the Google mobile homepage, you will find categories of places. And if you want more you can just select the “browse more categories” link.

Twitter for cars: Ford tech reads your incoming tweets aloud

Now you’ll be able hear your “tweets” on the street.

Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally will announce Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the automaker is incorporating a Twitter application into its next-generation Sync in-car communication system. It is one of three free apps — the others are online entertainment services Pandora and Stitcher — in the first wave of what Ford hopes will become a portfolio of mobile-phone-like apps available for tech-minded motorists.
